How much is a 10K gold ring worth?

Class rings: check it's really gold

Class rings are among the most common 10K pieces people sell, but not every class ring is gold. Many were made in lower-cost jeweler's alloys instead, sold under trade names such as Lustrium, Siladium or Valadium, which contain no gold. Look inside the band:

10K, 10KT or 417: solid 10K gold.
A trade-name alloy stamp, or no karat mark at all: probably not gold. Ask a buyer to test it before assuming either way.

Class rings are also heavy for their size and often set with a synthetic stone, which you can ignore for scrap value but should not count as gold weight.

Why 10K pays less than its weight suggests

A 10-gram 10K ring holds only about 4.2 g of pure gold. Buyers pay for that pure content, which is why a 10K ring is worth roughly 70% of a 14K ring of the same weight. Compare: 14K is $72.70/g today.
